On Hand Washing

The video essay On Hand Washing addresses issues around disinfection and aseptic actions in the operating theatres of surgery. Scrubbing and the creation of a sterile field of operation are ritualised processes. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic hygiene precautions are not at all confined to the clinic anymore. The risk of distributing the coronavirus leads to various tasks and restrictions which need to be fulfilled by all of us. Hand Washing (2018), a black and white multiple exposure 16mm film, is the result of a series of choreographic workshops and painting actions which took place at the artist-run centre OBORO in Montreal, Canada. Curator, art historian and physical theatre artist Tamar Tembeck (Montreal), cardiac surgeon Wilfried Wisser (Vienna) and I, sociologist and filmmaker Christina Lammer (Vienna) perform arts-based research together. For this we use theatrical methods, sensory ethnography and experimental filmmaking. ‘Einfühlung’ (empathy), gestures, proximity and distance, the hierarchy of the senses, isolation and relational aspects in general are among the questions we aim at discussing with our collaborative art and medicine projects. We encounter the current constraints with experience based and body-oriented approaches. Relearning to listen to the heart through performative and filmic practices. www.corporealities.org
